Alcoholics hide bottles
Overeaters stash wrappers
Gamblers hide credit card statements
Sex Addicts use technology to cover their tracks
Gamers lose jobs, sleep, & relationships
Parents hide their family shame
Why do you you do that?
It feels like self-preservation, doesn't it? But really, it's impression management.
You want to enjoy a reputation that, in your heart, you know you don't deserve.
You want things to look different than they really are.
You're keeping secrets.
The longer you live a double life, the more isolated you become.
IMPULSIVE - You might be going along in life, managing just fine, and all at once a stray thought comes to mind. You push it away, but it comes back. That's the impulsive part.
OBSESSIVE - Next you begin to entertain the thought and before long you can't think about anything else. An obsession is born as you plan how, when, where, and with whom to indulge your excessive appetites.
COMPULSIVE - When you act on it, no matter how many good reason you have not to, the compulsion kicks in and willpower goes on vacation. You either can't control the amount, or you can't stop at all once you start.
Even if you've tried 12-step solutions before and failed, please remember:
It's not your fault - the meetings failed you.
Change is a choice. Your choice.
Your call. We're here to help.
