The trouble with 12 step programs that focus on food is that they try to make the idea of abstinence fit for people with eating issues.
Could we agree that dieting is the problem (or a symptom of the problem) and not the solution? Could we just say no to one more futile attempt to lose weight? Could we read Step 1 as “Admitted we were powerless over diets and that our lives had become unmanageable.”
Research shows that binge eating is a primal biological response to restrictive eating, aka “dieting.” Food is not the problem. Ingredients are not the issue. Dieting that is prescribed as the solution to obesity has a 95% failure rate for long term loss and maintenance. Who in their right mind would pay for a 5% success rate?
